Airsynergy showcases new market products – a hybrid street light & a total energy solution – and launches additional business line for heating and ventilation systems. 20 new jobs expected. Company’s new micro wind turbine to fix energy costs at half that of utilities for 30 years.
Airsynergy, a leading renewable energy innovation company based in Granard, Co Longford is launching a new sister brand onesynergy as well as its initial products to market at the National Ploughing Championship, one of Europe’s largest festivals with an expected 300,000 visitors today, Tuesday September 22. The product launch comes after seven years of R&D and the raising of over €10 million in investment.
The company is based on the vision of Jim Smyth, CEO and lead inventor, and his ambition to bring sustainable, independent, affordable renewable power to people everywhere and places previously thought impossible. Jim, his four brothers Ger, Andy, David, Peter and friend Adrian Kelly, solicitor, founded airsynergy.
Products the company will be unveiling through its Irish and UK License Partner, Obelisk at the Ploughing Championships include the Total Energy Solution (TES) which is designed as a complete low cost energy generation and storage solution offering total energy independence 24 hours a day. It works on or off grid and has system flexibility for water harvesting and treatment.
Irish utility chief, Pat O’Doherty from ESB, speaking at a conference in Dublin last week, was reported as saying that he believe done third of Irish households would be generating their own power within 10 years revealing that his company was witnessing a dramatic rise in the number of people investing in technologies to reduce their reliance on the national grid.
And this move to energy self sufficiency is evident across the western world. Author and off-grid activist Nick Rosen has suggested a sharp increase in the numbers living off-grid – currently between 75,000 – 100,000 in the UK and over a million in America.
CEO of airsynergy, Jim Smyth, said: “It’s no surprise that people are investing in technology like ours in efforts to have their own power supply. Existing utility prices are currently running at some 16-22 cent per kilo watt hour and are only going to get higher. Our technology allows end users to fix their energy price at under 10 cent per kilo watt hour for up to 30 years. For the first time, people almost anywhere have a real renewable energy option.”
He added: “We want to put the power in people’s hands and provide them with a way to have an independent, secure, sustainable energy supply for less, almost anywhere in the world, on or off grid.”
This Irish proprietary, award-winning technology will transform the world’s wind map making some 80 per cent of the world’s low wind resource sites suitable for wind power as opposed to only 10 per cent in the past and can even be placed in locations with as little as 3.5 metres a second wind speed in urban locations with turbulent wind sources.
Also being launched is the Remote Power Unit (RPU), a hybrid (wind turbine and solar panel(s)) street light. Its revolutionary technology means that for the first time, urban environments and remote locations globally can enjoy a permanent, renewable lighting solution completely free from an external electrical power source. The product boasts over 50 per cent efficiency in urban areas compared with below 10 per cent for leading market competitor products.
The initial turbine range will be ideal for places such as farms, homes, offices, hotels, factories, telecoms masts, golf clubs and sports facilities, car parks, streetlights and ports.
New sister company
A sister company called onesynergy will also be launched today to concentrate on the heating and ventilation market and it will be showcasing the Passive Air Ventilation Exhaust Louvre (PAVEL) at the event.
Heating and cooling account for more than half of the energy used in most buildings. While airsynergy’s turbines dramatically cut the cost of producing power by approximately half, onesynergy’s cost effective system can work with exist extract fans systems to reduce power usage dramatically.
The initial target market is energy intensive users of power such as pig and poultry farmers but will also be aimed at underground car parks and anywhere which requires air extraction with or without fan usage.
The revolutionary system naturally improves airflow within buildings as it uses outdoor air movement to exhaust a building’s internal air without the need for any moving parts. The product itself will be maintenance free but will also reduce maintenance costs on existing air extract systems due to lower usage.
A US launch of the product range is set for next month and flagship projects will see the RPU street light with built-in rechargeable power source showcased in 16 prominent sites in New York. Others in the US will be installed in Florida, Maine, Carolina and Rhode Island.
New York-based Aris Renewable Energy LLC is licensed by airsynergy to develop, manufacture and sell sub 100kW wind turbines and wind-powered street lights using airsynergy’s patented technology in the US and Caribbean.
airsynergy currently employs 23 full time staff at it base in Granard and revealed earlier this summer its plans to hire up 10-12 more people by the middle of next year. It is expected that the going to market of the new HVAC system alone will result in a further 20 jobs in Ireland for airsynergy’s sales and manufacturing partners.

About the streetlight (RPU)
For the first time urban environments and remote locations can enjoy a permanent, renewable lighting solution completely free from an external power source. The off-grid product is ideal for providing reliable, independent light on roadways, walkways, parking lots and recreation areas and has added design capabilities to host cellular stations and showcase company branding. There are no trenching costs and the RPU is easy to install and maintain with tilt up tower technology. But, crucially, what this new product also offers is the fact that the unit comes with the option of being transportable, providing municipalities with reserve power for critical times or emergencies where needed which also makes it attractive for the armed forces operating in foreign countries.
About the TES (Total Energy Solution)
The TES is the complete low cost energy generation and storage solution offering total energy independence 24 hours a day and ideal for domestic and small commercial users. It provides the lowest cost secure, reliable power available at approximately half the utility price point for power, fixed for up to 30 years and works on or off grid – no need for expensive connections to an external power source. The complete energy solution also offers system flexibility for water harvesting and treatment. The TES utilises a ducted augmented wind turbine (DAWT) that alters the air properties in front of the turbine. This increases the velocity of the wind flowing past the blades to generate more power. This allows the two bladed rotor to generate power at much lower wind speeds while reducing noise levels. The dual rotor system utilises a slip clutch with both an augmented high torque multi-blade turbine and a two bladed high tip speed rotor. During operation the multi-blade rotor augments the air flow on to the rotor system allowing it to cut in at lower wind speed.

Unlike traditional HVAC systems that lose approximately one third of performance due to less than optimal rain rejection deigns, the PAVEL resists the ingress of rain during even the most extreme weather conditions. Conversely, rain rejection qualities built into the PAVEL actually improve with stronger winds facilitating the creation of vortices that propel the exhaust air from the building. The PAVEL is easy to install on an external duct upstand on a building’s roof and available in different colors or customised customer branding.
